Summary
"Mahler" is a 1974
biographical film based on the life of Austro-Bohemian composer Gustav Mahler.
Written and directed by Ken Russell, the film starred Robert Powell as Gustav
Mahler and Georgina Hale as Alma Mahler. The film entered into the 1974 Cannes
Film Festival, where it won the Technical Grand Prize.
Gustav Mahler and Alma Mahler
Gustav Mahler (7 July 1860~18
May 1911) was an Austro-Bohemian Romantic composer and one of the leading
conductors of his generation. As a composer, he served as a bridge between the
Austro-German tradition of the 19th century and the modern music of the early
20th century. Although he established his status as a conductor during his
lifetime, his music became widely popular after periods of relative neglect,
including a ban on its performance in much of Europe during the Nazi era. After
1945 his works were rediscovered by a new generation of listeners, and Mahler
became one of the most frequently performed and recorded composers.
Alma Mahler (31 August 1879~11
December 1964) was an Austrian composer, author, editor and socialite, who was
mentored by Max Burckhard, director of the Burgtheater, Vienna, at the age of
15. She was musically active from her early age and the wife of Gustav Mahler,
who composed about 50 works for vocal and piano.

The
Behind Stories about the Film
1.
Ken Russell wanted to make this film in real Austrian regions related to the
life of Gustav Mahler, but the money was not made. As a result, the entire film
was made in England, mostly near Russell's home in Cumberland.
2.
The scene of young Mahler skipping his music lessons was adapted from Isaac Babel's
short story "Awakening" (1931).
3.
Georgina Hale and Robert Powell appeared together in an episode of "The
Detectives", in which Powell and Jasper Carrott played Briggs and Louis.
