The film is a tribute to the life and music of jazz saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker. It consists of a montage of scenes from Parker's life, from his childhood in Kansas City to his death at the young age of 34.

1. Clint Eastwood asked Chan Parker, the common-law wife of Charlie "Bird" Parker, for the memoirs that were based on the screenplay. She gave Eastwood a collection of lost recordings she had kept in a bank vault.

2. This film was the first movie that Clint Eastwood received significant awards as a director. It won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and two awards at Cannes.

3. Clint Eastwood, a lifelong jazz fan, was fascinated by Charlie "Bird" Parker and his music after seeing him play in Oakland in 1945.
