Summary
“This Is Spinal Tap” is a 1984 American film, co-written and directed by Rob Reiner.
The film stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as members of the fictional English heavy metal band Spinal Tap, and Reiner as Martin "Marty" Di Bergi, a documentary filmmaker who follows them on their American tour.
The film satirizes rock bands’ behavior and musical pretensions, and the hagiographic tendencies of rock documentaries such as “The Song Remains the Same (1976)” and “The Last Waltz (1978)”, and follows the similar "All You Need Is Cash (1978)" by a fictional English rock group The Rutles.

Most of its dialogue in the film was improvised and it was shot in dozens of hours.
It was praised by critics, but at the time of its initial release, it had only a slight success. However, it became more successful after it was released on video tape.
In 2002, the film was rated "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

In 2016, film critic and author Jeremy Arnold chose the film as one
of the "52 Must-See Movies", describing it as "one of the single
most influential movies of the past thirty-five years" and arguing that it
"effectively launched a new genre—the mockumentary".

Interesting
stories about the film
1. The actors in this film are all
talented musicians and actually played the soundtrack.
2. When Nigel rubs a violin against
his guitar during his solo performance, it is a parody of Led Zeppelin
guitarist Jimmy Page, who played his guitar using a violin bow in many concert
performances.

3. Nigel talks with Di Bergi about
the influences from music masters, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann
Sebastian Bach. Nigel's solo, while their performance of "Heavy
Duty", is a tribute to Minuet, the 3rd movement of Luigi Boccherini's
String Quintet in E major, Op. 11, No. 5.

4. The Harry Potter's author J. K.
Rowling cited the film as inspiration for the unfortunate events that cause all
Defence against the Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts to leave the job before
completing a full school year.

5. Spinal Tap later appeared on
"The Simpsons (1989)."
