"The Best Offer" is a
2013 English-language Italian psychological thriller film written and directed
by Giuseppe Tornatore. The film stars Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Sylvia
Hoeks, and Donald Sutherland, with music by Ennio Morricone.
The film tells a story of love and
deceit, set in Europe, the world of ultra high-end art auctions and antiques.
The story revolves around Virgil Oldman, an old, wealthy, and respected but
eccentric, managing director of a prominent auction house. Oldman is hired by a
mysterious young heiress Claire Ibbetson, to auction off the large collection
of art and antiques to her by her parents. Claire, who suffers from severe
agoraphobia, never leaves her room and always refuses to meet people in person.
But she decides to trust Oldman, who suffers from obsessive–compulsive
disorder. Oldman, a lifelong bachelor who can empathize with her reclusiveness,
realizes that he has fallen in love with her.
The film received mixed reviews on
various movie review sites, including Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
