How are
you?
Following
the last week, I am going to start my 79th lecture.
Today's
lecture is “Ethnic Fusion”, the 6th topic of “New Age Music”, which is a
summary of the contents of “79. New Age Music: 6. Ethnic Fusion” introduced on March
18th, 2017.
Ethnic Fusion is a genre different from “World Fusion” (a fusion of jazz and world music) or “World Beat” (world music influenced by Western pop), which can be confused with this genre. This genre is rooted in the sound and philosophy of New Age music and combines traditional folk music with modern electronic music. The general aim of this genre is to find a way to create harmony and integration between Western technology and natural culture.
Jazz musicians Tony Scott and Don Cherry are included in the first musicians who combined world music with Western music forms, and minimalist composers Terry Riley and Philip Glass made music with a non-Western scale and structure.

Along with these attempts, early ethnic fusion music was formed in the late 70s and early 80s by Jon Hassell, who made music with Brian Eno, the pioneer of ambient music.

Ethnic Fusion was preferred by musicians playing modern musical instruments to expand their sound with new rhythms or non-Western musical instruments, and other musicians also blended ethnic fusion music with modern musical instruments and New Age feeling.
The latter musicians includes Clannad of Celtic folk music, Ottmar Liebert of Flamenco, Kitaro of Japanese folk melodies and Carlos Nakai of Native American flute music.

In the
early 90s, ethnic fusion artists such as Enigma, Dead Can Dance and Deep Forest
introduced club dance beats to mixed music blending a variety of sounds from
medieval European music to samplings of field recordings of African pygmy.

In addition to the above-listed musicians, the famous musicians for ethnic fusion include Jesse Cook, the Canadian guitarist and composer and one of the most influential figures of the Nuevo flamenco music genre; Coyote Oldman, a duo of new-age music consisting of native American flutists, Barry Stramp and Michael Graham Allen; Enya, the Irish musician who was a member of the Irish folk rock group Clannad with her elder sister Moya Brennan; and Ravi Shankar, the Idian musician and composer, and one of the best sitar players.
