77. New Age Music: 4. Atmospheric, ACJ Music Academy

How are you?

Following the last week, I am going to start my 77th lecture.

Today's lecture is “Atmospheric”, the fourth topic of “New Age Music”, which is a summary of the contents of “77. New Age Music: 4. Atmospheric” introduced on February 25th, 2017.

Atmospheric” is composed of individual's voluntary will to appreciate music, and refers to the form of listening to individual music and the target music to obtain emotional stability by making the acoustic environment beautiful. In the creation of such an environment, acoustic elements that can feel the natural environment of the sounds of nature such as the sounds of birds and wind are also included.

It is different from the “Ambient”, targeting a large number of unspecified listeners in any given spaces, in that the “Atmospheric” composes the listening environments and acoustic elements by individual's voluntary will.

This genre can be viewed as connecting the flow of “Easy Listening” genre, which gained great popularity from the 1950s to the 1960s. Some also refer to the music genre as Progressive Music and the music genre is dominated by keyboardist musicians. The musicians in Atmospheric genre have nothing to do with avant-garde, and can be seen as a connection of the trend of pop, rock, world music, jazz or classical music.

Unlike the other genres of New Age music, it is the music that generally creates a soft and pleasant atmosphere, and also referred to as “Contemporary Instrumental.” It pursues a sound allowing listeners to feel nature like the sounds of birds or waves along with the splendid tones of advanced electronic instruments.

Representative artists in this genre include Davol, Chris Spheeris, G.E.N.E, 2002, Mike Oldfield, Suzanne Ciani and Yanni.

75. New Age Music: 2. Ambient music, ACJ Music Academy

How are you?

Following the last week, I am going to start my 75th lecture.

Today's lecture is “Ambient music”, the second topic of “New Age Music”, which is a summary of the contents of “75. New Age Music: 2. Ambient music” introduced on February 11th, 2017.

Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. This music was born out of an experimental and synthesizer-centric style of music in the 1960s. Ambient music in a relatively open style is often influenced by a variety of music genres, including house, dub, and industrial.

Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Erik Satie and Irv Teibel are the artists who have influenced the advent of ambient music. Although German bands such as Popol Vuh and Tangerine Dream outpaced Brian Eno in this kind of music, Eno played an important role in the popularization of this genre and he is often referred to as the founder of ambient music.

Eno said "Ambient music has to be able to accommodate different levels of listeners without focusing on a specific group of listeners." He coined the term “ambient music” and popularized this music with the album “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” released in 1978. He used the term “ambient” based on the Latin word “ambire” meaning “enclosed” to describe music to create an atmosphere that transforms listeners into different mental states.

In addition to Brian Eno, there is Wendy Carlos, who played a major role in the creation of ambient music. Her music "Timesteps" was also used in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange"

Ambient music gained popularity for the first time in the 1970s, regained popularity in the late 1980s with the advent of house and techno music, and has gained enthusiasm since the 1990s.

The Orb and Aphex Twin are musicians who were commercially successful with their ambient music in the early 1990s.
