75. New Age Music: 2. Ambient music, ACJ Music Academy

How are you?

Following the last week, I am going to start my 75th lecture.

Today's lecture is “Ambient music”, the second topic of “New Age Music”, which is a summary of the contents of “75. New Age Music: 2. Ambient music” introduced on February 11th, 2017.

Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. This music was born out of an experimental and synthesizer-centric style of music in the 1960s. Ambient music in a relatively open style is often influenced by a variety of music genres, including house, dub, and industrial.

Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Erik Satie and Irv Teibel are the artists who have influenced the advent of ambient music. Although German bands such as Popol Vuh and Tangerine Dream outpaced Brian Eno in this kind of music, Eno played an important role in the popularization of this genre and he is often referred to as the founder of ambient music.

Eno said "Ambient music has to be able to accommodate different levels of listeners without focusing on a specific group of listeners." He coined the term “ambient music” and popularized this music with the album “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” released in 1978. He used the term “ambient” based on the Latin word “ambire” meaning “enclosed” to describe music to create an atmosphere that transforms listeners into different mental states.

In addition to Brian Eno, there is Wendy Carlos, who played a major role in the creation of ambient music. Her music "Timesteps" was also used in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange"

Ambient music gained popularity for the first time in the 1970s, regained popularity in the late 1980s with the advent of house and techno music, and has gained enthusiasm since the 1990s.

The Orb and Aphex Twin are musicians who were commercially successful with their ambient music in the early 1990s.
