Portrait of Goya, Vicente López Portaña (c. 1826)
He is considered the most important
Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Goya left many works
as a court and recording painter, and was also one of the great portraitists at
the time.
The film won two categories at 1999
Montréal World Film Festival, Best Cinematographer at 2000 European Film Awards
and five categories at 2000 Goya Awards.
Plot
Deaf and ill, Francisco Goya spends
the last years of his life in voluntary exile in Bordeaux, protesting the
oppressive rule of Ferdinand VII. He is living with his much younger wife
Leocadia and their daughter Rosario.
The Milkmaid of Bordeaux, Portrait of Leocadia Weiss, Francisco Goya (1825–27)
With headaches and old age constantly
tormenting him, Goya paints every night and recalls important parts of his
life, especially his relationship with the Duchess of Alba and his passion for
painting.

Interesting
stories about the film
A strange coincidence:
the actor Francisco Rabal not only played the old Goya but actually died in
Bordeaux in 2001, two years after the film was premiered.
Thank you.
