The film tells the troubled life of French sculptor Camille Claudel and her long relationship with the sculptor Auguste Rodin.
Beginning in the 1880s, with the first meeting of Claudel and Rodin, the film follows the development of their intense romantic bond. The development of this relationship, along with the rise of Claudel's career, helped her to overcome prejudices against female artists of her time.

However, as Rodin's fame rises and he loves another woman, their romance soon suffers. These difficulties, along with her increasing doubts about the value of her work, drove her into an emotional agitation that develops into her insanity.

Interesting
stories about the film
1. Alain Cuny, who played Camille
and Paul Claudel's father, actually met Paul Claudel. In 1944, the poet and dramatist
Paul Claudel personally chose Cuny for the role of Pierre de Craon in his play
"The Tidings Brought to Mary."

2. A major scene in the movie describes the announcement of the death of Victor Hugo. In the film "L'histoire d'Adèle H. (1975)", Isabelle Adjani played Adèle Hugo, the daughter of Victor Hugo, who suffered from schizophrenia, like Camille Claudel.
