Summary
“La Pianiste” is a 2001
French-language erotic drama film written and directed by Michael Haneke, based
on Elfriede Jelinek’s 1983 novel of the same name. The film tells the story of
an unmarried piano teacher at the Vienna conservatory, who lives with her
mother in a state of emotional and sexual disequilibrium and enters into a
sadomasochistic relationship with her students. The film, co-produced by
Austria and France, gave Haneke an opportunity as the director after previous
attempts to adapt the novel by filmmakers Valie Export and Paulus Manker
collapsed for financial reasons.
It won the Grand Prix, and Isabelle
Huppert and Benoît Magimel won Best Actress and Best Actor starring in this
film at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

Interesting
stories about the film
1. Isabelle Huppert actually played
the piano in the film. She had studied piano for 12 years. To prepare for her
role as a piano teacher, she started practicing again a year before filming
began.

2. This film won three of the most
important awards (Grand Prize, Best Actress, Best Actor) at the 2001 Cannes
Film Festival. Since this festival, rules prohibiting judges from giving too
many important awards to the same film have made.
3. Isabelle Huppert's performance
in this film was considered as one of the greatest of the past decade and
inspired actresses such as Jessica Chastain or Nicole Kidman.
4. Isabelle Huppert also played a
piano teacher in the psychological thriller "Greta (2018)”, starring with
Chloë Grace Moretz.

5. On the back wall of a snack bar,
guided by Erika, there is a theater poster "Frequency". The movie
“Frequency (2000)” is an actual movie filmed in Canada and the United States,
not a movie about music. Each key on the piano has its unique frequency.
