The 12th place I would like to introduce for this week is The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, United States.

MoMA plays an important role in the development and collection of modern and contemporary art, and is often regarded as one of the largest and most influential modern and contemporary art museums in the world. 

MoMA's collection offers a broad overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books, and artists’ books, film and electronic media. The MoMA Library has approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs, more than 1,000 periodicals, and more than 40,000 ephemera files about individual and group artists.  MoMA's archives have main resources related to the history of modern and contemporary art.

Amedeo Modigliani in Worldwide Museums: 11. The National Gallery of Denmark

How are you?

The 11th place I would like to introduce for this week is The National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The National Gallery of Denmark (Danish: Statens Museum for Kunst, also known as "SMK") is the largest art museum in Denmark and is also officially the main museum for visual art in Denmark. SMK supports fostering and developing museum activities throughout Denmark, and cultivating and strengthening cooperation with museums in Denmark and abroad.

SMK has the largest art collection in Denmark with over 260,000 works. The art collection was originally built as the royal collection, meaning the private property of the Danish kings, but with the introduction of democracy in Denmark in the mid-1800s, the collection was handed over to the people, which ultimately gave birth to SMK. 

The large collection of works of art can be seen at SMK's exhibitions and presentations, but the collection is so vast that if you visit SMK on a specific date, only a small part of it will be displayed. Many works in the collection are displayed at other museums in Denmark or abroad as part of their exhibitions, but most of the collection is kept in the museum's storage facilities. 

Currently, SMK is working to realize its ambition to digitize its entire art collection, making it freely available online.

Amedeo Modigliani in Worldwide Museums: 10. The Centre Georges Pompidou

 

How are you?

The 10th place I would like to introduce for this week is The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France.

The Centre Georges Pompidou is a cultural complex in the Beaubourg area of the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles, rue Montorgueil, and the Marais. The building was designed in the style of high-tech architecture by the architectural team of Richard Rogers, Su Rogers, Renzo Piano, along with Gianfranco Franchini.

The center has the “Bibliothèque publique d'information”, a vast public library, the “Musée National d'Art Moderne”, the largest museum of modern art in Europe, and “IRCAM (Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique)”, a music and acoustic research center. Because of its location, the center is locally known as “Beaubourg”. 

The center is named after Georges Pompidou, the President of France from 1969 to 1974, who commissioned the establishment of the building, and was officially opened on January 31, 1977 by then President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Since opening in 1977, more than 180 million visitors, including museum visitors, have visited the center.

Amedeo Modigliani in Worldwide Museums: 8. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)

How are you?

The 8th place I would like to introduce for this week is The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in Los Angeles in the United States.

LACMA is an art museum located on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile near Los Angeles. Founded in 1961 by splitting from the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art, the museum moved four years later to the Wilshire Boulevard complex designed by architect William Pereira. 

The museum's wealth and collection increased in the 1980s, and several buildings were added in following decades. In 2020, four buildings were demolished to make room for a reconstructed facility designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. However, his design aroused strong community opposition and was criticized by architectural critics and museum curators, objecting to its reduced gallery space, poor design, and exorbitant costs.

LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with nearly one million visitors annually. With a collection of more than 150,000 works from ancient to modern art history, LACMA not only exhibits artworks, but also hosts film screenings and concerts.
