Amedeo Modigliani in Worldwide Museums: 13. The Musée de l'Orangerie

The 13th place I would like to introduce for this week is The Musée de l'Orangerie.

The Musée de l'Orangerie is an art gallery of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings located in the west corner of the Tuileries Gardens next to the Place de la Concorde in Paris. 

The museum is best known for the eternal home of eight large “Water Lilies” murals by Claude Monet, and also has works by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Rousseau, Alfred Sisley, Chaïm Soutine, Maurice Utrillo, and others.

The building was built by Napoleon III in 1852 to protect the citrus trees of the Tuileries garden from the cold winter. 

The building was built by architect Firmin Bourgeois, and he built it using glass on the south side of the building, Seine River for sunlight to the trees, but almost completely windowless on the opposite north side to protect the citrus trees from the cold winds. 

The main entrances on the east and west side of the building were decorated by architect Louis Visconti, who is also famous for his renovation on the Louvre. After the Fall of the Empire in 1870 and the fire at the Tuileries Palace in 1871, the building became a property of the State.

Amedeo Modigliani in Worldwide Museums: 10. The Centre Georges Pompidou

 

How are you?

The 10th place I would like to introduce for this week is The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France.

The Centre Georges Pompidou is a cultural complex in the Beaubourg area of the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near Les Halles, rue Montorgueil, and the Marais. The building was designed in the style of high-tech architecture by the architectural team of Richard Rogers, Su Rogers, Renzo Piano, along with Gianfranco Franchini.

The center has the “Bibliothèque publique d'information”, a vast public library, the “Musée National d'Art Moderne”, the largest museum of modern art in Europe, and “IRCAM (Institut de recherche et coordination acoustique/musique)”, a music and acoustic research center. Because of its location, the center is locally known as “Beaubourg”. 

The center is named after Georges Pompidou, the President of France from 1969 to 1974, who commissioned the establishment of the building, and was officially opened on January 31, 1977 by then President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Since opening in 1977, more than 180 million visitors, including museum visitors, have visited the center.

Amedeo Modigliani in Worldwide Museums: 3. Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris

The 3rd place I would like to introduce for this week is the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in Paris, France.

Located between the Champs-Elysées and the Eiffel Tower, Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris is a symbol of 1930s architecture and one of the representative establishments of the Parisian cultural field. The museum has more than 15,000 works of art from the 20th century to the present, including monumental murals by Raoul Dufy, Gaston Suisse, and Henri Matisse.

Located in the eastern wing of the Palais de Tokyo and constructed for the International Exhibition of Arts and Technology of 1937, the museum was inaugurated in 1961. Then, after a period of renovation, it reopened on February 2, 2006, with an exhibition dedicated to Pierre Bonnard.

It is also one of 14 City of Paris' Museums, which since January 1, 2013, have been incorporated in the public institution Paris Musées.

Among the museum collection, the modern collection focuses on the artistic movements that have developed in Paris since Fauvism in 1905, while the contemporary collection from the 1960s is more open to the European artistic scene such as Nouveau Réalisme. More recently, the collection has spread the artists from all over the world, including the United States, China, Africa, etc.

My new article “Lost Works of Amedeo Modigliani in Early Paris Period. Why?” was published in Quid Magazine

How are you?

My fourth article was published in “Quid Magazine”, an Italian online art magazine I am working as a visiting columnist and writer.

The topic of this article, as before, is about Amedeo Modigliani, and the title of the article is “Lost Works of Amedeo Modigliani in Early Paris Period. Why?"

After moving to Paris, France in 1906, Modigliani was very active in his career but his remaining paintings, especially during the years of 1906-1908, are very few.

The Works by Amedeo Modigliani: 95. Landscape, Southern France (1919)

Modigliani Institute Korea (MIK) is currently introducing artworks of Amedeo Modigliani.

The 95th work to introduce for this week is “Landscape, Southern France” in 1919.

This work is an expressionist style landscape and an oil painting on canvas with the size of 61 x 46 cm and possessed by Private Collection.

One of the distinctive features of this painting is that it presents Modigliani’s two signatures at the bottom of the painting.

Modigliani, who painted a lot of portraits, did not seem to be very attracted to landscapes, and as a result, the number of landscapes he painted is very small. 

Modigliani went to Normandy, northwest France, in 1911, where he worked for a while, and it was exceptional for Modigliani, who hated leaving Paris. Modigliani worked hard in Yvetot and Fecamp in Normandy, small towns where the life was monotonous at the time, but it seems that they were not the places for ideal landscapes to Modigliani. 

In contrast, however, in the south of France, Modigliani portrays his childhood memories in the form of a serene landscape. 

In 1919, Modigliani left Jeanne and his baby in Nice and went to Cagnes-sur-Mer where he shared a studio with Chaïm Soutine and painted this landscape.

The painting clearly shows the homage to Cézanne, based on the chosen subject and the way it was expressed.

It is also noteworthy that he painted this painting in the vertical form of the portraits that Modigliani had mainly painted, rather than taking the horizontal form normally used in the landscapes.

The density and expression of colors in the painting are reminiscent of Modigliani's hometown of Livorno, Tuscany. Modigliani loved his hometown of Italy very much and missed his hometown until his death, and his final words were "Cara Italia" on his deathbed.

Cagnes-sur-Mer and Nice in southern France, where he stayed, located at the same latitude as Modigliani's hometown, Livorno, Italy, share the light and water of the Mediterranean Sea, and these southern regions of France seem to have been ideal places that Modigliani felt the nostalgia of his hometown.
