Summary
“Van Gogh” is a 1991
French film written and directed by Maurice Pialat. In the film, Jacques
Dutronc, who starred as the role of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, won the César
Award for Best Actor in 1992.
Set in 1890, the film shows the last 67 days of
Van Gogh's life, and explores his relationships with his brother Theo, his
doctor, Paul Gachet, who is most famous for the model of Van Gogh's painting "Portrait
of Dr. Gachet," and the women in his life, including Gachet's daughter, Marguerite
Gachet.

The film was an entry to the Cannes
Film Festival in 1991 and was selected as the French entry for the Best Foreign
Language Film at the 64th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
The film is famous for its
anti-melodramatic and unsensationalistic approaches to Van Gogh's life. For
this reason, it is often contrasted with Vincente Minnelli's Van Gogh film “Lust
for Life” in 1956.

While this film introduces very little about Van Gogh's art
and work, it devotes the bulk of the running time to describe the artist's personal
relationships and mental state. The film also omits many of Van Gogh's most
famous incidents, including his attempt to cut off his ear in 1888.

Interesting stories about the film
Originally, Daniel Auteuil was considered as Vincent van Gogh's role in the film, but he declined. Then, the role was proposed to Jean-Hugues Anglade, but Jacques Dutronc was finally cast.
Thank you.
