Following the last week, I am going to
start my 58th lecture.
The lecture topic for this week is “Pop
Music in 1970s”. It is a summary of the contents of “58th ACJ Music Academy,
History of Pop Music: 3. 1970s”, which was introduced on August 20, 2016.
Disco, which appeared in the
1970s, was one of the most popular music genres of this period. Rock music was
still a popular music genre during this period, in particular, the sub-genres
derived from Rock, such as Hard rock, Progressive rock, and Heavy metal, had
great success. In addition, the development of electronic music was remarkable
during this period, and with the development of synthesizers, Synth pop, which
mixed Electronic music with Pop music, was born.
First of all, looking at Rock,
the 1970s was the time when Hard rock, one of the most prominent sub-genres of
Rock, appeared. Among the Hard rock artists, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Led
Zeppelin, Nazareth, and Black Sabbath gained great popularity in the first half
of the 70s and AC/DC, Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and Ted Nugent were very
popular in the second half of the 70s.

Arena rock’s popularity was
increased with musicians such as Styx, The Who and Pink Floyd.

Country rock is a fusion of
Country music and Rock music. In particular, one of the representative bands of
the genre, The Eagles, became the most successful Country rock artist of all
time with the album “Hotel California,” released in 1976.

In the 1970s, Southern rock, a
style similar to Country rock, gained popularity among country music fans due
to the bands such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band and The Marshall
Tucker Band.

Progressive rock was gradually
moved to more Pop rock-oriented bands such as Boston, Foreigner, Journey and
Kansas from innovative musicians such as Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and
Blood, Sweat and Tears, and they had commercial success with the British bands,
Supertramp and Electric Light Orchestra.

In the late 70s, many American
bands began making experimental New wave music with synthesizers, and the
representative musicians are Talking Heads, The Cars, and Devo.

Cheap Trick and Loverboy created Power pop, combining Punk rock and Pop music.

In the mid-1970s, Punk rock,
originated from Garage Rock in the 1960s, appeared and The Ramones, Patti Smith
and Blondie are examples of the first American Punk rock bands that have made
Punk rock popular in the UK and the United States.

The most notable Pop/Soft
rock groups of the 1970s were The Carpenters, The Jackson 5 and Bay City
Rollers, and they gained great popularity in music charts and radio broadcasts.
In addition, Fleetwood Mac, one of the representative groups in this genre,
released the album “Rumours” in 1977, which was one of the most sold albums
of the time.

For Country music, the most
successful female Country singer in the 1970s was Loretta Lynn, who was ranked
number one on the Billboard Top Country Singles Chart for three weeks with
"Coal Miner's Daughter", released in 1970.

Music in 1960s”. It is a summary of the contents of “57th ACJ Music Academy,
History of Pop Music: 2. 1960s”, which was introduced on August 13, 2016.
The 1960s was a particularly
revolutionary period for pop music as Rockgenre was formed and developed.
In the early 1960s, the trend of pop
and rock and roll which was popular in the 1950s was continued but rock and
roll before the 1960s began to transform into a form known as Rock.
In the
United States, in the early 1960s, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez were
singer-songwriters, who played an important role for the folk music revival
movement.

The initial attempt to combine the elements of folk and rock was the
"House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals in 1964, which was the first
commercially successful folk song by recording with instruments playing rock
and roll.

In the early 1960s, one of the rock and roll's most popular styles,
Surf Rock, featured almost entirely performances and strong use of the guitar's
reverb. The Beach Boys, who were active
in the 1960s, contributed to popularize this genre by adding complex pop
harmony to the basic surf rock rhythm.

Garage Rock, first born around
1958, was popular in the United States in the mid-1960s. The name of the genre
was born because many bands practiced in the garage at home. The content of the
lyrics was far more aggressive than other genres at the time, with inconsistent
shouting and growling of the vocal. Garage Rock was at its peak commercially
and artistically in 1966, and in 1968, as many musicians went on to study, find
employment, or join the army, this style mostly disappeared from the charts.
Progressive rock is sometimes
used in combination with art rock, and it was an attempt to escape from
established musical forms by experimenting with various musical instruments,
musical types and forms. This form can be heard in "A Whiter Shade of
Pale"by Procol Harum in 1967, which included introduction inspired by
Bach.

Checker drove a twist-craze with the cover song of "The Twist" by
Hank Ballard & The Midnighters.

Gerry Goffin and Carole King, who
wrote many number one hits, including The Shirelles' "Will You Love Me
Tomorrow", which was recorded as the first number one hit of female group,
and "The Loco-Motion" by Little Eva in 1962, emerged as a duo who

The Country music in the 1960s enjoyed
constant popularity, and its record sales continued to increase with the emergence
of new artists and trends. Many artists such as Jim Reeves, Ray Price and Patsy
Cline, who have acted in this genre, have had great success with songs such as
"He'll Have to Go", "Make the World Go Away" and "I
Fall to Pieces".

Ray Charles showed a typical country pop style in his album 'Modern Sounds in
Country and Western Music', released in 1962, which included songs such as
