Alfred Sisley was an Impressionist painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citizenship. He was the most consistent of the Impressionists in his dedication to painting landscape in outdoors.

He rarely painted figures and, unlike Renoir and Pissarro, he was an artist who thought Impressionism fulfills his artistic needs. Among his important works are a series of paintings of the River Thames, mostly around Hampton Court, painted in 1874, and landscapes depicting places in or near Moret-sur-Loing.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings.

The striking color, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work greatly influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His art became popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century.

Van Gogh’s works include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits. However, he was not commercially successful and his suicide at 37 followed years of mental illness and poverty.

From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property and began a vast landscaping project.
In 1899, he began painting the water lilies, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as a central feature and later in the series of large-scale paintings that was to occupy him continuously for the next 20 years of his life.
