ARTIST OF THE WEEK: 23. Peter Paul Rubens, ACJ Art Academy

Name: Peter Paul Rubens
Born: June 28, 1577; Siegen, Germany
Died: May 30, 1640; Antwerp, Belgium
Nationality: Flemish
Art Movement: Flemish Baroque, Baroque
Field: Painting, Printmaking
Influenced by: Titian, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Caravaggio, Hans Holbein the Younger, Adam Elsheimer
Influenced on: Gustave Courbet, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, John Constable, Théodore Géricault, Eugene Delacroix, Rosa Bonheur, Claudio Coello
Friends/Co-workers: Diego Velazquez

Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish artist who specialized in altarpieces, portraits, landscapes and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects, and his unique painting style emphasized movement, color and sensuality. Rubens ran a large studio in Antwerp and was also a humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England. In addition, he was a prolific artist, and the catalogue of his works by Michael Jaffé includes 1,403 pieces, which excluded numerous copies made in his workshop.

The works he was commissioned were mainly "history paintings", which included religious and mythological themes and hunting scenes. Rubens painted portraits, especially of friends, and self-portraits, and in later life several landscapes. Most of his works are very forceful and without great detail, and he made great use of oil sketches as preparatory studies. Rubens was also one of the artists who consistently used wood panels, even for very large works, but he also used canvas, especially if the work needed to be sent a long distance. For altarpieces, he sometimes painted on slate to reduce reflection problems.

Artist of The Week: 22. Rembrandt, ACJ Art Academy

Name: Rembrandt
Born: July 15, 1606; Leiden, Netherlands
Died: October 4, 1669; Amsterdam, Netherlands
Active Years: 1625 - 1669
Nationality: Dutch
Art Movement: Baroque, Dutch Golden Age
Field: painting, printmaking, drawing
Influenced by: Peter Paul Rubens, Caravaggio, Titian, etc.
Influenced on: Carel Fabritius, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Gustave Courbet, Chaim Soutine, Francis Bacon, Ilya Repin, etc.

Rembrandt was a Dutch painter and printmaker, and considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and the most important in Dutch art history. Unlike most Dutch masters of the 17th century, Rembrandt's works depict a wide range of style and subject matter, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, historical scenes, biblical and mythological themes as well as animals.

His contributions to art came in a period, Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch art, antithetical to the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was extremely prolific and innovative, and gave rise to important new genres. Like many artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jan Vermeer of Delft, Rembrandt was also an avid art collector and dealer.

Vincent van Gogh wrote, "Rembrandt goes so deep into the mysterious that he says things for which there are no words in any language. It is with justice that they call Rembrandt magician."

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: 19. EDGAR DEGAS

Name: Edgar Degas
Born: July 19, 1834; Paris, France
Died: September 27, 1917; Paris, France
Nationality: French
Art Movement: Impressionism
Field: Painting, sculpture, drawing
Influenced by: Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Edouard Manet, Eugene Delacroix
Influenced on: Edward Hopper, Henri Gervex, Paul Gauguin, Mary Cassatt, Walter Sickert, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Aaron Shikler, Richard Diebenkorn
Friends and Co-workers: Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Telemaco Signorini, Giovanni Boldini

Edgar Degas was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist. He was a superb draftsman, and particularly masterly in depicting movement, as can be seen in his rendition of dancers and racecourse subjects. At the beginning of his career, Degas wanted to be a history painter, but in his early thirties, he changed course, and by bringing the traditional methods of a history painter to bear on contemporary subject matter, he became a classical painter of modern life.
