Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish
artist who specialized in altarpieces, portraits, landscapes and history
paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects, and his unique painting
style emphasized movement, color and sensuality. Rubens ran a large studio in
Antwerp and was also a humanist scholar and diplomat who was knighted by both
Philip IV of Spain and Charles I of England. In addition, he was a prolific
artist, and the catalogue of his works by Michael Jaffé includes 1,403 pieces,
which excluded numerous copies made in his workshop.
The works he was commissioned were
mainly "history paintings", which included religious and mythological
themes and hunting scenes. Rubens painted portraits, especially of friends, and
self-portraits, and in later life several landscapes. Most of his works are very forceful
and without great detail, and he made great use of oil sketches as preparatory
studies. Rubens was also one of the artists who consistently used wood panels,
even for very large works, but he also used canvas, especially if the work
needed to be sent a long distance. For altarpieces, he sometimes painted on
slate to reduce reflection problems.
