Interesting Art Stories: 69. Woman with a Mirror, Titian, ACJ Art Academy

How are you?

Currently, I am introducing the stories about various artists and their paintings with the title Interesting Art Stories.

The 69th story is Woman with a Mirror by Titian.

Woman with a Mirror” is a painting by Titian in circa 1515 and now in the Musée du Louvre.

Self-Portrait, Titian (c. 1567)

It is known that this painting was purchased by Charles I of England from Gonzaga family in Mantua. After Charles I was executed, the painting was purchased by Louis XIV of France for the Palace of Versailles.

To date, several attempts have been made to identify the woman in this painting. These attempts included Titian's lover, Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara’s lover Laura Dianti, or Federico II Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua’s lover Isabella Boschetti, but it is still debating.

Portrait of Laura Dianti, Titian (c. 1520–25)

Titian painted Dianti in his “Portrait of Laura Dianti”. She also seems to be the model not only as several Madonnas and the clothed figure in “Sacred and Profane Love” but also in the “Flora” in the Uffizi Gallery, the “Vanity” in Alte Pinakothek, Munich, “Salome” in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery, Rome, and the “Violante” and the “Young woman in a black dress” in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Many versions of this painting, which are identical in quality to the original but smaller in size, exist, and the best of which are in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona, the gallery of Prague Castle and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

A woman of idealized beauty overlooks a parapet and caresses her hair with her right hand while touching a bottle placed on the parapet (which appears to contain a perfume or ointment) with her left hand. A mirror held by a man behind her shows the back of the woman and the window illuminating the room, and also the woman is staring at another small mirror the man is holding while dressing up.

This painting shows a harmony of color and composition typical of the young Titian, who enhanced the beauty and sensuality of his subjects.

Thank you.

Nationality: Spanish, Greek

Art Movement: Mannerism (Late Renaissance)

Field: painting, sculpture, architecture

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, best known as El Greco, was a Greek painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance, who was born on October 1, 1541 and died on April 7, 1614.

was born

His nickname "El Greco" denotes his Greek origin, and he normally signed his paintings with his birth name in Greek letters, “Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος”, and often added “Κρής Krēs”, meaning Cretan, to his signature.

El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia (now Crete), which was then part of the Republic of Venice and the center of Post-Byzantine art

He moved to Rome in 1570, where he opened a workshop and created a series of works. During his stay in Italy, El Greco enriched his style with elements of Mannerism and of the Venetian Renaissance, influenced by a number of great artists of the time, especially Tintoretto

In 1577, he moved to Toledo, Spain, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life and he commissioned and completed several important works that became his most famous paintings.

El Greco's dramatic and expressionistic style of paintings was embarrassing to his contemporaries, but in the 20th century they were appreciated.

While he is regarded as a pioneer of Expressionism and Cubism, his personality and works have been a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis

He is most famous for his unusually elongated figures and fantastic pigmentation based on Byzantine traditions with those of Western painting.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: 55. Paolo Veronese, ACJ Art Academy

Born: 1528; Verona, Italy

Died: April 19, 1588; Venice, Italy

Nationality: Italian

Art Movement: Renaissance, Mannerism (Late Renaissance)

Field: painting

Influenced by: Antonio Badile, Giovanni Francesco Caroto, Titian

Influenced on: Eugene Delacroix, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Teachers: Antonio Badile, Giovanni Francesco Caroto

Paolo Caliari, known as Paolo Veronese, was an Italian Renaissance painter born in 1528 and died on April 19, 1588.

House of Veronese, Venice

He was one of the representative painters of Venetian school, who was based in Venice and famous for large-scale history paintings with themes of religion and mythology, such as "The Wedding at Cana" and "The Feast in the House of Levi."

The Feast in the House of Levi (1573)

Along with Titian and Tintoretto, he was one of the "great trio” representing Venetian painting in 16th century. Known as a supreme colorist, he developed a naturalist style of painting, influenced by Titian.

His most famous works are characterized by a dramatic and colorful style, full of majestic architectures and glittering pageantry. Especially famous for his large-scale paintings on the theme of biblical feasts, crowded with people, depicted in the monasteries in Venice and Verona, he was also a representative ceiling painter among Venetian school.

Most of these works remain in situ, or in Venice. However, unlike his typical features, his works in most museums are mostly much smaller works, such as portraits. He received many praises for the brilliance of his palette, splendid and sensible brushwork, the aristocratic elegance of his figures and magnificent spectacle in his paintings, but he has often been the least appreciated by modern critics among the "great trio" including Titian and Tintoretto.

Nevertheless, he was a painter who was respected and admired by many greatest artists, including Peter Paul Rubens, Antoine Watteau, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Eugène Delacroix and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
