He was one of the representative painters of Venetian school, who was based in Venice and famous for large-scale history paintings with themes of religion and mythology, such as "The Wedding at Cana" and "The Feast in the House of Levi."

Along with Titian and Tintoretto, he was one of the "great trio” representing Venetian painting in 16th century. Known as a supreme colorist, he developed a naturalist style of painting, influenced by Titian.

His most famous works are characterized by a dramatic and colorful style, full of majestic architectures and glittering pageantry. Especially famous for his large-scale paintings on the theme of biblical feasts, crowded with people, depicted in the monasteries in Venice and Verona, he was also a representative ceiling painter among Venetian school.

Most of these works remain in situ, or in Venice. However, unlike his typical features, his works in most museums are mostly much smaller works, such as portraits. He received many praises for the brilliance of his palette, splendid and sensible brushwork, the aristocratic elegance of his figures and magnificent spectacle in his paintings, but he has often been the least appreciated by modern critics among the "great trio" including Titian and Tintoretto.
Nevertheless, he was a painter who was respected and admired by many greatest artists, including Peter Paul Rubens, Antoine Watteau, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Eugène Delacroix and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
