In 1873, Pissarro formed a group of 15 ambitious artists and became a central figure binding and encouraging the members of the group. Pissarro was not only the oldest in the group, but also a kind and warmhearted person with wisdom. Paul Cézanne said, "Pissarro was a father to me and was like the Lord to counsel when I was in difficult situations." He was also one of Paul Gauguin's teachers. Pierre-Auguste Renoir evaluated his works as “revolutionary”, through his artistic depiction of "ordinary man" who insisted on drawing figures in nature without "artifice or grandeur".
Pissarro is also the only artist to exhibit his work at all 8 Impressionist exhibitions held in Paris from 1874 to 1886. He acted as a father not only to Impressionist artists, but also to the major Post-Impressionists, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin.
