Summary
“The Chronicle of Anna
Magdalena Bach” is a film in 1968 by the French filmmaking duo of Jean-Marie
Straub and Danièle Huillet. The film was their first full-length feature film,
and it took a decade to finance for the film production. The film starred famous
harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt as Johann Sebastian Bach and Christiane Lang as
Anna Magdalena Bach. The orchestral music was performed by the Austrian Baroque
music ensemble “Concentus Musicus Wien” based in Vienna and conducted by
Austrian conductor “Nikolaus Harnoncourt”. It is also the first of several Straub-Huillet
films to be based on works of classical music. The film was entered into the
18th Berlin International Film Festival.
Movie
Review
“Saturated with Bach's music”
“Maybe not for the average music lover”
Interesting
stories about the film
Gustav Leonhardt portrayed Bach in
his only film as an actor. He is a world-renowned music scholar, specialized in
Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. He is a harpsichord virtuoso whose Bach
recordings he recorded both as harpsichord player and conductor are considered
as the finest in recording History.
Thank you.
