Summary
“Song of Norway”, directed
by Andrew L. Stone, is a 1970 film adaptation of the operetta of the same name
written in 1944 by Robert Wright and George Forrest, adapted from the music of
Edvard Grieg and the book by Milton Lazarus and Homer Curran. The film tells of
the early struggles of composer Edvard Grieg and his efforts to create an
authentic Norwegian national music. It stars Toralv Maurstad as Grieg and
features international cast, including Florence Henderson, Christina Schollin,
Robert Morley, Harry Secombe, and Frank Porretta. The film, shot by Davis Boulton
in Super Panavision 70, was produced in an attempt to capitalize on the success
of “The Sound of Music”, a successful 1965 musical film released in the United
States.

Interesting
stories about the film
1. This film was the debut movie of
Florence Henderson.
2. It was the movie that actress
Margaret Rutherford signed as her last film, but because of her poor memory at
the time, she was replaced by another actress before shooting began.
3. It was the only film for opera
singer Frank Porretta, who played the best friend of Grieg, Rikard.
4. In 1968, it was announced that
Richard Burton and Audrey Hepburn would star of the film, and then changed.
5. This was one of the last movies
