Frédéric Bazille was a French Impressionist
painter who was born on December 6, 1841 and died on November 28, 1870. Many of
Bazille's major works are figure paintings in outdoor landscape.
He was born in a wealthy Protestant
family in Montpellier, France. He became interested in painting after seeing
the works of Eugène Delacroix. His family allowed him to study painting under
the condition that he also studied medicine together.
Frédéric Bazille
Bazille started studying medicine
in 1859 and moved to Paris in 1862 to continue his study. There, he met Pierre-Auguste
Renoir and Alfred Sisley, was fascinated by Impressionist painting, and began taking
classes in Charles Gleyre's studio. In 1864, Bazille, who failed his medical
exam, began painting full-time. Bazille was generous with his property and
helped his poor friends by providing them with his studio and money.
Bazille joined army in August 1870,
a month after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. In the Battle of Beaune-la-Rolande
on November 28 of that year, Bazille, who took command and fought with the
Germans when his officer was injured, died at the age of 28. His father came to
the battlefield a few days later to take his body, and his body was buried at
Montpellier about a week later.
