Jacques-Louis David was a French
painter in the Neoclassical style, and regarded as an outstanding painter at
the time.
Famous history paintings drawn by David in the 1780s changed people's
tastes from Rococo's frivolity to classical austerity and severity and heightened
feeling, harmonizing with the moral atmosphere of the last few years of the
"Ancien Régime".
David later became an active
advocate of the French Revolution and a friend of Maximilien Robespierre.
However, David, who was imprisoned after Robespierre lost his power, supported
another political power, Napoleon upon his release. At this time, he developed
his own "Empire style", famous for using the warm colors of "Venetian
painting".
After Napoleon was evicted from the power, David exiled himself
to Brussels and remained there until his death.
David, who had many pupils, had
the greatest influence in French art of the early 19th century.
