“The Spirit of Freedom” | “Liberty Leading the People” in Music

What if a great painting could be heard as music?

This question is at the heart of my ongoing creative project, “Melodies on Canvas – A Journey Through Art & Sound.”

For the 19th journey in this series, I chose one of Eugène Delacroix’s most celebrated works, “Liberty Leading the People.”

When I look at this painting, I do not see only a historical scene. I see movement, tension, courage, uncertainty, sacrifice, color and, above all, a powerful sense of human aspiration.

And I began to wonder:

What would this painting sound like?

That question became the starting point for my new original composition, “The Spirit of Freedom.”

“Listening to Masterpieces: Amedeo Modigliani” — A Love Story Told Through Art and Original Music

Amedeo Modigliani is remembered as one of the distinctive artists of early 20th-century Paris.

But behind his elongated portraits and unforgettable artistic style was another story — the story of his relationship with Jeanne Hébuterne.

I recently created my first Udemy course, “Listening to Masterpieces: Amedeo Modigliani,” to explore this story in a different way.

Rather than creating a conventional art-history lecture, I wanted to combine:

• Modigliani’s paintings and artistic world
• The story of Modigliani and Jeanne Hébuterne
• Storytelling
• Female narration
• And 10 original musical compositions that I wrote specifically for their story

The result is an artistic drama in which art, music and storytelling come together.

The course follows their journey from their meeting and love to separation through death and the idea of an eternal reunion.

This project has been particularly meaningful to me because the music was composed specifically for Modigliani and Jeanne.

Rembrandt's The Night Watch is one of those masterpieces that seems to contain its own hidden sound.

Completed in 1642, the painting is one of the defining works of the Dutch Golden Age and one of Rembrandt's most celebrated masterpieces.

Yet what makes it extraordinary is not simply its historical importance.

The painting feels almost like a single frozen frame from a much larger story.

If the civic guards began their procession through the streets of Amsterdam, what would that moment sound like?

That imagination became “Golden Shadows.”

🎨 🎵 “The Quiet Gothic”: Turning Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” Into Music

"Every masterpiece has a melody. Welcome to Melodies on Canvas."

What kind of music would you hear if you could listen to a painting?

This question is at the heart of my ongoing “Melodies on Canvas – A Journey Through Art & Sound” project.

For the 17th composition in this series, I chose Grant Wood’s “American Gothic,” one of the most recognizable works of American art.

Painted in 1930, “American Gothic” depicts two figures standing in front of a Gothic Revival-style farmhouse. The man holds a pitchfork, while the woman stands beside him. Their serious expressions, formal poses, and the architecture behind them create a remarkably distinctive image.

But beyond the familiar visual elements, there is something else that drew me toward the painting.

Silence.

Discipline.

Hard work.

Responsibility.

A sense of duty.

And perhaps even a quiet tension that cannot easily be explained.

I wondered what these emotions might sound like.

The result is “The Quiet Gothic.”

That was the question that inspired my latest composition.

 

Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights” is one of those extraordinary works that seems to contain an entire universe within a single painting.

 

The painting seems to move from innocence and paradise toward earthly pleasure, desire, curiosity and temptation, before revealing a much darker and more disturbing world.

 

I wanted to translate that emotional journey into music.

 

The result is:

And music becomes another way of seeing a painting.

The luminous gold, the embrace of two lovers, the flowers, the intricate patterns and the dreamlike atmosphere all seem to exist outside ordinary time.

I wanted to translate that feeling into music.

What if a painting could be heard?

Amedeo Modigliani and Jeanne Hébuterne shared a brief but powerful love story in early twentieth-century Paris.

Their lives were short, but their artistic legacy continues to inspire audiences around the world.

I have devoted years to studying Modigliani's life and work and founded the Modigliani Institute Korea to introduce his artistic legacy to a wider audience.

With this course, I wanted to approach Modigliani from a different perspective.

Not simply through dates and facts.

Not simply through art historical analysis.

But through storytelling, music, emotion, and visual art.

 

That idea became:

“Melting Hours” — Inspired by Salvador Dalí’s “The Persistence of Memory”

Time seems simple.

A minute is a minute. An hour is an hour. Yesterday becomes today, and today eventually becomes tomorrow.

But memory tells a different story.

This strange relationship between time and memory is one of the reasons Salvador Dalí’s “The Persistence of Memory” continues to feel so fascinating.

The melting clocks seem to challenge our ordinary understanding of time.

“What would time sound like if it could melt?”

That question became the inspiration for my new instrumental composition, “Melting Hours.”

In this project, I transformed the swirling stars and deep blue atmosphere of Van Gogh’s masterpiece into cinematic instrumental music.

Through piano, ambient textures, and orchestral emotion, I wanted to translate visual art into sound.
