Niko Pirosmani was a Georgian
painter born in 1862 and died in 1918, who taught himself to paint.
Pirosmani's paintings were influenced by the social conditions of his time and place, and his paintings contain many works depicting merchants, shopkeepers, workmen, and noblemen.

Portrait of Alexander Garanov, Niko Pirosmani |
He
was fond of nature and rural life, rarely drew city landscapes and made many
animal paintings. He was also fascinated by historical figures and subjects
such as Shota Rustaveli, Queen Tamar and Giorgi Saakadze, as well as ordinary
Georgian people and their everyday lives.
Shota Rustaveli, a medieval Georgian poet |
Queen Tamar of Georgia |
Giorgi Saakadze, a Georgian politician and military commander |
In general, Pirosmani painted on
oilcloth and, unlike other artists, he did not aim at a pure imitation of the
nature, and did not pay attention to details. Some of his paintings are
monochrome, and the faces in his paintings do not express a specific mood.
A Tatar Fruiterer, Niko Pirosmani |
Batumi port, Niko Pirosmani |
Begos' Friends, Niko Pirosmani |
Healer on a Donkey, Niko Pirosmani |
Pirosmani, who lived in poverty for
most of his life, died in April 1918 of the Spanish flu, also known as the 1918
flu pandemic, as a result of malnutrition and liver failure.
He gained fame after his death and
is now one of Georgia's most beloved artists.
