Interesting
stories about the film
1. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon sang all of the songs themselves without dubbing and learned to play their instruments (guitar and auto-harp).
2. The film was screened for the
prisoners of Folsom Prison, 38 years after Johnny Cash's landmark performance.

3. Waylon Payne originally
auditioned for the role of Waylon Jennings. Director James Mangold was so
impressed by Payne's audition that he cast Payne as Jerry Lee Lewis.
Interestingly, the actor who played the role of Waylon Jennings was Waylon's
son, Shooter Jennings.

4. Johnny Cash approved Joaquin
Phoenix to play him in the film because he liked his performance in Gladiator
(2000). June Carter Cash also approved Reese Witherspoon for her role in the
film.
