Summary












Walk the Line” is a 2005 American film directed by James Mangold. Co-written by Mangold and Gill Dennis, the screenplay is based on two autobiographies "Man in Black: His Own Story in His Own Words (1975)" and "Cash: The Autobiography (1997)" written by singer-songwriter Johnny Cash

The film follows Cash's early life, his romance with June Carter, and his rise in popularity in the country music scene. In the film, Joaquin Phoenix stars as Cash, Reese Witherspoon as Carter, and Ginnifer Goodwin as Cash's first wife Vivian Liberto.

The film previewed at the Telluride Film Festival on September 4, 2005, and released on November 18. The film, which received positive reviews from critics, was nominated for five Oscars at the 78th Academy Awards.

Interesting stories about the film










1. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon sang all of the songs themselves without dubbing and learned to play their instruments (guitar and auto-harp).

2. The film was screened for the prisoners of Folsom Prison, 38 years after Johnny Cash's landmark performance.

3. Waylon Payne originally auditioned for the role of Waylon Jennings. Director James Mangold was so impressed by Payne's audition that he cast Payne as Jerry Lee Lewis. Interestingly, the actor who played the role of Waylon Jennings was Waylon's son, Shooter Jennings.

4. Johnny Cash approved Joaquin Phoenix to play him in the film because he liked his performance in Gladiator (2000). June Carter Cash also approved Reese Witherspoon for her role in the film.
