How are you?

This work is a portrait
commissioned by the Swiss painter Henri Van Muyden.
It is one of the few portraits that Modigliani painted a woman in an evening dress. Besides this work, the other portraits of a woman in an evening dress by Modigliani are as follows.

The model in this work gives an intuition that she is a lady with high social status at the moment a viewer sees the work. The appearance of the woman who evokes gentleness and dignity stands out more by her slightly gloomy gaze, and her appearance stands out against the gray background. In addition, the crescent-like woman's eyebrows and her double eyelids, which are difficult to see in Modigliani's other works, make her appearance more beautiful.
The woman's face tilted to the left based on the viewer's side is in balance with the woman's nose tilted to the right, and the angle of the tilted face is almost similar to that of the woman’s right arm. In addition, based on the woman's waist, emphasized by the belt, the woman's upper and lower bodies are shaped like a sandglass or two cones attached to each other.

The model’s eyes having almost
similar color of the background express pupils by drawing outlines instead of
drawing them separately, which was Modigliani's expression style of drawing
pupils, as in other works at the time, and the woman's nose has sculptural
feeling.
The woman's skin is slightly
reddish, but such reddish color even make the viewer feel the paleness of the
aristocratic atmosphere, and the deep neckline and round shoulders make the
woman feel noble.

Along with this, the elegant
woman’s dress, together with the belt and bracelet, further enhances her
elegance.
Thank you.
